Downtown Redevelopment
Did you know that the City of Los Altos has a master plan for the redevelopment of downtown? It’s called the “Downtown Vision” and you can view it here.
Our downtown is charming but it was designed in the mid-twentieth century. The ability to shop and order online has changed both the retail and restaurant industries. The needs and expectations of our residents have changed and downtown needs to adjust to accommodate those changes.
I don’t see the Downtown Vision as a blueprint. I see it as an aspiration. The Downtown Vision shows us what our largest business district can be.
It is not the place for the City Council to impose its vision on the City. The stakeholders – residents, property owners, and businesses – must work together and let the Council know what they need and want. Not everyone will agree, but the City Council should work to drive consensus, and then effect the changes needed to allow downtown to serve our community in the best way possible.
